Making Takakau

Today we made takakau (Maori bread). It is a type of bread made with flour and water, although some groups used milk and baking powder too. We had to research and create a recipe before we began, and had Matua Midge help us to get te right consistency. We were all really happy with how our takakau turned out, and some of us will enter it in the competition tomorrow. It has been a fun week of eeling and baking :)

  1. Hi Room 5,

We would really like to try to make Takakau in our class, just like you all have! What tips could you give us about making it?

Miss Stone and Room 8, Glenbrae School

    1. Hi Room 8 and Miss Stone, we just used the recipes we found on the internet. Here is a recipe you could try :)

      2 Cups Flour
      Pinch Salt
      Water or Milk
(Baking Powder can be used. 1 tsp of Baking Powder per Cup of Flour)

Sift flour, salt and optional baking powder. Add water or milk to a sticky consistency and shape with as little handling as possible into a circle about 2cm thick. Either wrap in tin foil and throw into embers or place on a hot oven tray and bake in pre-heated oven at 200*C for approximately 30 mins or until golden brown.
Takakau can be placed in the embers and the burnt crust taken off before eating.
Another delicious serving idea with Takakau is to spread hot butter & golden syrup - this is how we like it!

Enjoy making the delicious takakau and please let us know how it goes. :)

    2. Thanks very much for this recipe! We are hoping to try it out next week :)
